Information
28 GS-4s were produced between 1941 and 1942 during World War II. The "G" in GS stands for "Golden State" (nickname for California), and the "S" stands for "General Service." There were locomotives from GS-1 to GS-6, and the GS-4 was the fourth generation.
It was used to pull named trains such as the "Morning Daylight," a daytime express train on the West Coast that was the pride of the Southern Pacific Railroad and was advertised as "the most beautiful train in the world." The locomotive had a maximum speed of 177 km/h, but the maximum speed was limited to 121 km/h, and the 18-car Daylight ran at an average speed of 113 km/h.
During the war and for several years after the war, some of the cars were painted black, but in 1948, all were repainted in daylight paint.
In later years, most of the locomotives were painted black again and were used to pull freight trains.
The last operation was in 1958, and all the locomotives were retired.
