The 521 series is a commuter train that began operation in 2006, and runs as local and rapid trains mainly in the Hokuriku region.
The third batch of 521 series cars appeared in 2013, and were redesigned from the conventional 521 series, with a change in the design of the front end and the installation of a front-end fall prevention hood.
They are operated in a minimum of two-car formation, or two coupled formations for a total of four cars.
