JR Chiki 5500 (JR West Japan specification) 12 cars
information
The Chiki 5500 series was a freight car introduced in 1974 as a freight car for transporting long rails. It was created by modifying the KoKi 5500 series, which was surplus at the time due to issues with loading efficiency.
When the Japanese National Railways was privatized, they were inherited by all JR companies except for Hokkaido and Shikoku.
The group inherited by JR Freight is compatible with 50m rails and is used in sets of three cars.
The same type owned by JR passenger companies is compatible with transporting long rails of around 200m and is used in formations of 10 to 13 cars.
These cars were replaced by diesel cars and retired by JR East and Central, and are now in service with JR West and Kyushu.
