The 485 series was introduced in 1968 as a limited express vehicle that was compatible with three power sources: DC and AC 50/60Hz, and was used in electrified sections across the country.
The limited express "Raichou" was introduced in 1964 as a limited express train connecting Kansai and Hokuriku.
The 485 series ``Raicho'' has been used for many years, and as the star limited express of the Hokuriku Main Line due to its large number of trains, it has become the representative 485 series limited express train in western Japan.
From 1989 to 1991, Panorama Green cars appeared as a modification of the Salo 489 and Saha 481 types, and were used on the Super Raicho, and were active until 2001, after which they were used on the Shirasagi, and in 2003, It is now used in "Raicho".
The 485 series A02 formation at the Kyoto General Driving Center is a formation that has been modified from the Salo 489 type and is a formation that connects panoramic green cars with small windows on the side, and the lead car on one side has a unique through-door due to the modified car. Since it was Kuha 481 type 801, it attracted attention as a distinctive formation.
In March 2010, when the number of ``Raicho'' operated by the 485 series was reduced, the A02 formation was retired.
