With the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen in the spring of 2016, the EH800 type was developed based on the EH500 type as a locomotive that is compatible with both types of equipment, such as multiple voltages, as the Seikan Tunnel will be shared by the Shinkansen and conventional lines.
The rooftop is equipped with facilities compatible with both Shinkansen and conventional lines.
