During the Showa era of Japan National Railways, when railway transportation played the main role in logistics, mail and luggage transportation by railway was carried out using mail and luggage cars connected to passenger trains. Trains began to be operated, and express freight trains were also operated on trunk routes such as the Tokaido/Sanyo Main Line and the Tohoku Main Line.
