During the Showa era of Japan National Railways, when railway transportation played the main role in logistics, freight transportation by railway was carried out by luggage cars connected to passenger trains, but as the amount of transport increased, dedicated freight trains were operated. Express freight trains were also operated on main routes such as the Tokaido/Sanyo Main Line and the Tohoku Main Line.
There were quite a number of luggage cars that had been converted from old passenger cars, and there was a wide variety of luggage trains made up of steel mail cars, pallet luggage cars, and mail cars.
In 1968, pallet transportation began using the newly manufactured pallet truck, which was introduced as a trump card for modernizing cargo transportation.
At first glance, this pallet car looks like a freight car, but it was incorporated into baggage trains and express trains, and was used throughout the country.
