The EF81 type is an electric locomotive that was introduced in 1968 and is compatible with DC/AC 50Hz and AC 60Hz.
At the time when the Hokutosei was in operation, the EF81 class vehicle belonging to JR East's Tabata driving station, which was responsible for towing the sleeper express train, was painted Red No. 2 and had a design with a meteor drawn on the side of the vehicle. .
Mainly active in towing the Hokutosei, and at one point also in towing the Akebono and Hakutsuru.
When the EF510 type 500 was introduced in 2010, it took over the role of towing the Hokutosei.
Since the EF510 type 500, which replaced the similar series, was transferred to JR Freight by 2016 due to the discontinuation of the Hokutosei, it is currently mainly used to tow the Cassiopeia.
