The 455 series, which played an active part in the express trains "Matsushima" and "Bandai" that connected Ueno and various parts of Tohoku in the past, was introduced in 1965 as an output-enhancing type of the 451 series, and has a speed-controlled generator. It was mainly used on the Tohoku and Ou Main Lines as a 50Hz dedicated AC/DC express train for gradient line sections with brakes.
It is a 13-car train consisting of 7 + 6 cars including the Sahashi 455 equipped with a half-room buffet, divided and merged on the way, and 7 cars are "Matsushima" and "Iwate" on the Tohoku Main Line, and 6 cars are "Ban'etsu West Line". It was seen to be operated as "Dai" and Ou Main Line "Zao".
