The Chiki 5500 was introduced in 1962 in order to expand the number of containerized trains to various parts of Japan, following the popularity of the first container-only train "Takara-go" of JNR.
After that, in 1965, the name was changed to Koki 5500 in the title revision, and it was active all over the country.
