The Kiha 40 series is a general-purpose diesel car that appeared in 1977, and 888 cars were manufactured.
JR East inherited 219 Kiha 40 series and played an active part in various parts of the Tohoku region.
With the advent of new vehicles, Kiha 40 series general type vehicles in each region of Tohoku were replaced, and the last remaining Akita area was retired due to the timetable revision on March 13, 2021.
On the Oga Line, which connects Akita and Oga, the Kiha 40 series, which is painted with a green band based on cream, was active.
