The EF65 type appeared in 1965, and a total of 308 cars were manufactured.
Unit 1019 was changed to paint to match the Super Express Rainbow that appeared in 1987.
The EF65 type 1000 series inherited by JR East belonged to the Tabata driver's office, and the early model was active on the Tohoku Main Line, Takasaki Line, and Joetsu Line.
The tail light of the EF65 type 1000th early model of Tabata driver's office was replaced with an external fitting type around 1990 with the installation of ATS-P.
