The EF81 appeared in 1968 as an AC / DC electric locomotive that supports both 50 Hz and 60 Hz DC and AC.
Operation started on the Sea of Japan Longitudinal Line with direct current and alternating current 50 and 60 Hz sections, and the operation line area was expanded after that with high versatility.
The EF81 for the Twilight Express, launched in 1989, was painted with a yellow band on the green with the passenger car, and later in the year silver bands were added to the top and bottom of the yellow band as the passenger car was renewed.
