Information
This is the newest model electric locomotive which has replaced ED79 and EH500 that became inoperative in the tunnel on Tsugaru Strait Line as it now has to share the high voltage power with Shinkansen due to the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen Line to Shinhakodatehokuto station. Currently the locomotive pulls freight trains between Higashiaomori and Goryokaku. Based on the design of EH500, it is changed from DC/AC to AC only with double voltage of 20,000V and 25,000V. The locomotive has adopted a structure and cooling system to prevent condensation due to humidity in the undersea tunnel to Hokkaido and the mechanism under floor is protected by covers against snow accumulation. On the roof, FPS6 single-armed pantograph and LCX antenna are installed, and the body on No. 2 end is bulged due the antenna installation.
