Information
The Usui Pass between Yokogawa and Karuizawa, which is indispensable for the Japanese railway history, was abolished in 1997. Among railroad fans, it is still handed down as a legend.
This type, which was newly made to run through the Usui Pass, has an unrivaled 3-axis dolly and is extremely lightweight, and it was used on the Shin-Etsu Main Line together with the EF63. It is a vehicle that meets the contradictory requirements of light axle weight in line with the railroad standards before and after the Usui Pass, while having features such as high adhesiveness and braking performance, and measures to prevent slipping including slope sections.
A total of 54 cars including the prototype car of the 1st machine, the air filter (fin type), the previous model with an oval pedestal with an internal squeeze taillight, the air filter (punch plate type), and the latter type with an external stab taillight Was manufactured.
The EF62 late model incorporates the improvements of the initial model, the center end beam extension of the underframe, the punch plate of the air filter, the change of the cab side window, the relocation of the lightning arrester, etc.
When the freight train on the Usui Pass section was abolished in 1984, 26 cars were transferred to Shimonoseki driver's office in order to replace the EF58 operated on the Tokaido / Sanyo Main Line. We were able to see the various operations being performed as a towing machine for luggage trains and temporary passenger trains.
